President's Perspective

Greetings to all members, old and new alike. I am honored to lead our organization for the next 12 months and have high hopes for a productive term. As I pen this note, the afterglow of our recent 23rd Annual Meeting and Conference at the University Club (UC) in Washington, DC still flickers warmly. Thanks to those who attended and condolences to those who could not be with us. Washington is such a wonderful town, and she was on her best behavior for our attendees. Your board of directors had a productive meeting Friday morning. The schedule of events for the conference was deliberately weighted to outside speakers given the deep pool of legal talent that offices on K Street. These visiting firemen did not let us down, and the reviews of their presentations were uniformly strong. To lighten things up Friday afternoon the director of the SEC Historical Society took us on a virtual tour of the museum (see link below to visit). Friday night we had cocktails and dinner at the UC and dined on filet mignon and Maryland crab cakes. The evening ended with a “gloves off” roundtable discussion between two retired SEC Commissioners moderated by a former director of the Commission’s enforcement division – you could have heard a pin drop in the room! Saturday’s program was equally stimulating and fellow members led and staffed two of the panels. New member Rick Chess wrapped things up by leading our traditional members’ “roundtable” discussion where anyone can jump up and relate an issue with their practice and hear how fellow experts have dealt with a similar problem. It was lively and candid, just as we hoped. After freshening up, we jumped into a van and trucked over the Potomac to the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial with its iconic statue of five Marines and a Navy corpsman triumphantly raising Old Glory on the peak of Mount Suribachi early on in the bloody fight to capture Iwo Jima in February 1945. It is a magical and sacred site, overlooking the city and fronting Arlington National Cemetery. We then headed for dinner at the Army Navy Country Club (ANCC), a leafy 254 acre pastoral wonder sitting smack in the middle of Arlington a mere driver/three iron from the Pentagon. ANCC’s staff treated us like royalty in our private room in the newly refurbished clubhouse. After dinner we had a unique opportunity to hear views on national security and sustainability from a retired U.S. Navy Vice Admiral, Lee F. Gunn. The admiral was at the top of his game, but our crowd was spellbound by the introduction given by his accomplished wife Lily. She spoke passionately about what it was like to hold a family of four together over her husband’s 35-year military career (15 overseas deployments and 22 moves with neither child attending the same high school two years consecutively) while pursuing her own career in music. A memorable night!

Many thanks to our member panelists for the time and effort put into their presentations. Kudos go to long-time member/former treasurer/now controller of SER, Patti Koetting and to our hard working administrator, Rachel Remler, for their work in organizing the event details from the registration process to the “Event Guide”.  Respectfully, Bruce Foerster, President

More thanks to Rick Ryder for running our SER ad in SAC's Online Litigation Alert (SOLA) on July 15th and again on August 3rd in Update ARBchek (UA). Both events saw increased traffic to our site!
